Eternity Splinters drop from enemies as loot throughout Marvel Heroes. They can drop from treasure chests as well as any enemy mob or boss in the game and seem to roughly drop at a rate of 1 per 5 minutes of active-enemy-defeating-play. They can also be obtained from a Fortune Card Mark II. These mark II cards have a common chance to give you 25 Eternity Splinters and a rare chance to give you 100 Eternity Splinters.
Eternity Splinters can be used as currency to buy items including new hero unlocks, additional levels in your ultimate power and Retcon Devices. The 'for free' mentioned in the textbox is relative, and means that you can spend this item as an ingame-acquired currency to pay for these hero unlocks, etc. rather than having so spend real money for Gs to spend in the ingame Gazillion shop. However, neither Adam Warlock nor the Asgardian Vendor (the Eternity Splinter Vendor one) hand out their inventory 'for free' as you need a big stack of Eternity Splinters to buy something from them.
